Created in March 2011, CMar Consulting, LLC is a woman-owned firm based in Jacksonville, Florida committed to provide innovative, high quality, cost effective and on-time environmental and GIS consulting services to private and government clients. Our staff has a strong foundation in marine and coastal science, planning and management, and over 16 years of working experience with coastal and marine information management and analysis. Services include marine and coastal information management, coastal planning and management, environmental permitting, GIS training and technical writing support.
In April 2012 CMar Consulting, LLC become a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) in Florida and a Jacksonville Small and Emerging Business Enterprise (JSEB) Certified firm. In May 2012 the firm received its Florida Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) Certification. As of April 2013, CMar is also a certified Small Business Enterprise (SBE) by the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD). Dr. Alexandra Carvalho, Owner and Principal, of CMar Consulting, LLC has a “Licenciatura” in Marine Biology and Fisheries from the University of Algarve in Portugal and a Ph.D. in Oceanography - Coastal Zone Management from the Florida Institute of Technology (FIT) in Melbourne, Florida, US. In April 2011 Dr. Carvalho become a Geographic Information Systems Professional (GISP). In May 2017 Dr. Carvalho received a postbaccalaureate graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Systems from Pennsylvania State University.
Currently, among other projects, Dr. Carvalho manages the Martin County Engineering Division Coastal GIS Program. Dr. Carvalho has consolidated over 20 years of coastal program data for the County and created several desktop and web based GIS data management and planning tools to facilitate access to historical and current project data to coastal planners and managers in the Engineering Division. Dr. Carvalho provides data updates and tool improvements to the Engineering Division several times a year.
Timeline
Dr. Carvalho received her "Licenciatura" degree in Marine Biology and Fisheries in 1993 from the University of Algarve (UA) in Portugal. At UA she developed a strong foundation in marine and coastal sciences, resource management, statistics, and geospatial data application to the coastal and marine environment. In 1993 Dr. Carvalho received a 2-year Fulbright scholarship to pursue a doctorate program in Coastal Zone Management in the United States of America. The doctorate program at Florida Tech started in the fall of 1994 and in the fall of 1995 the Portuguese national funding agency for science, research and technology, Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT), awarded her a 5-year scholarship to continue the doctorate program.
Dr. Carvalho earned her a Ph.D. in Oceanography - Coastal Zone Management in 2000 from the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Florida, US. During her doctoral program Dr. Carvalho continued working with coastal and marine statistical and GIS applications, and started developing her own. While at Florida Tech she held a research assistant position with the Division of Marine and Environmental Systems working with the Sebastian Inlet Wave, Weather and Tide Monitoring Gages.
In January 2001 Dr. Carvalho joined Taylor Engineering, Inc. Her responsibilities included providing scientific, planning, and data management support to the environmental, coastal, waterfront, water resources and GIS groups. At Taylor Dr. Carvalho supported or managed more than 100 projects for private, government and federal clients. Project areas included environmental planning; scientific and engineering statistical and geostatistical analysis; spatial data consolidation, QA/QC, management and analysis; land, coastal and marine spatial planning and environmental permitting.
In March 2011 Dr. Carvalho funded CMar Consulting, LLC.
In May 2017 Dr. Carvalho received a postbaccalaureate graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Systems from Pennsylvania State University. |
